Formed from the name Clio, the Greek Muse of history, and “metrics,” which in this instance has nothing to do with metrical verse but with the function of computers. It seems there is now a school of historians calling themselves cliometricians or sometimes “economic historians” who employ computers to determine the accuracy of historical research. The end result of their work has been somewhat slightingly defined as “history fed through computers.”
