"God rest you merry, gentlemen."

The phrase “rest you merry” dates to the beginning of the fifteenth century.  The Old English word for “merry” did not mean gay and lively, but merely pleasant and agreeable.  By the fourteenth century, however, it had acquired its present meaning.
